Basketball

Our after-school basketball program at P.S. 159, led by Mr. Jaden and Mr. Shamar, provides a supportive and dynamic environment where kids can develop both athletic skills and personal growth. Through regular practice, participants not only improve their basketball abilities but also learn valuable life skills like discipline, communication, teamwork and resilience. Under the guidance of Mr. Jaden and Mr. Shamar, the program encourages a sense of camaraderie, helping kids build friendships and work together towards common goals. In addition to physical fitness, the program fosters self-confidence, leadership, and a strong work ethic, empowering young athletes to excel both on and off the court.

MBK

The My Brother's Keeper (MBK) initiative is dedicated to improving the lives of boys and young men of color. Mr. Duke and Mr. Jaden selected a group of ten boys they believe will benefit from the program. Every Friday, they meet to discuss their goals and achievements in class. On the last Friday of each month, the group gathers, from other schools, with other MBK participants to share their experiences.
In October, MBK's District 19 program chose "College Readiness" as its theme for the year. Through this theme, the boys get a glimpse of what college life is like and explore the opportunities and doors that higher education can open. Mr. Duke and Mr. Jaden also share their personal college experiences, offering valuable insight into why attending college is important, even at a young age.
This mentorship program provides a safe space for the boys to express their thoughts, struggles, and successes, all while gaining valuable knowledge often introduced in high school. The MBK program at PS 159 is making a positive impact, and the boys are enjoying it. They are excited to continue growing and supporting each other as true Brothers Keepers.

Pitkin Panther Stompers

The Pitkin Panther Stompers feel the rhythm and celebrate syncopated dances.  A Step Team is a group that performs stepping, a percussive dance style that uses synchronized clapping, stomping, and vocal chants to create rhythmic patterns. Originating from African American fraternities and sororities, stepping showcases teamwork, precision, and creativity. Step teams often compete and perform at school events, community gatherings, and national competitions.  The Stomping Steppers have been featured in various District events and are known for amazing moves!

STUDENT COUNCIL

The student council at P.S. 159, led by our wonderful Ms. Godinho, is a dedicated group of 4th and 5th grade students committed to making a positive impact on our school community. Elected by their peers, council students work together to be the voice of the school-wide student body. They represent student interests, organize events, and foster a sense of unity and school spirit, a great opportunity to develop leadership skills. From planning school dances and fundraisers to initiating community service projects, the student council plays a vital role in enhancing the student experience while making lasting memories.  Most recently, the student council organized a donation drive, collecting hats, gloves, scarves, and socks to drop off at our community’s adult center where they spent time playing games and engaging with the elderly.
